TRAINER resources.

This hidden page will be made available to US Lacrosse Certified Trainers who conduct training for ENCWLOA and US Lacrosse Certified Observers who Observe and perform Ratings.

Training Program Requirements

HOMEWORK
Two (2) – three (3) hours of videos to watch remotely, in advance of in-person training.
  • Training videos are available on EdPuzzle website.
  • Training instructor sends newbies the links to training videos in advance of training event.
  • Training instructor tracks class progress to make sure people have watched videos.
CLASSROOM Training
Hours & Schedule
10-11 hours of in-person classroom training.
  • Typically broken up into three (3) weeknight evenings and one (1) weekend morning. But the schedule is definitely flexible based on the availability of classroom space and instructors.
Example:
  • Tuesday, 6PM – 9PM Thursday, 6PM – 9PM Friday, 6PM – 9PM Saturday, 8:30AM – 10:30AM

Classroom training information/details

Questions to ask of host location:
  • Classroom location – is there a classroom number? Is there a campus map? Where should people park?
  • Classroom access – how do the instructor and trainees get into the building and get into the classroom? Can the instructor arrive early to set-up? Is there a contact person on-site for access and technology needs?
  • Classroom seating/space – how many seats are available?
  • Classroom layout – is it a typical classroom or does it have stadium seating?
  • Classroom technology – what technology is available? Is there a Smart TV? Is there a projector? How does the instructor connect to the system? Is there internet access? Is there an internet access or security code?
  • Is there space to practice whistles and visual signals? Can people stand and practice visual signals? Is there a space to practice doing the draw (without a ball)?
ON-FIELD TRAINING
On-field Instruction & Review

Ideally, there would be three (3) hours of on-field instruction, without teams to do field check, pre-game meeting with partner, pre-game meeting with captains & coaches, Ropes Demo for positioning
(tangent / quadrants) for Lead and Trail, Transitional positioning, Practice doing the draw, etc.
  • Arrange for on-field instructional time.
  • On-field Training (Shadowing & Live Officiating)
  • Arrange for anywhere from two (2) to four (4) hours of live scrimmaging to use for on-field training.
  • New officials will shadow certified/senior officials to learn positioning and get used to seeing live play.
  • Arrange to have teams that can scrimmage for 4 – 6 hours.

If the training isn’t being planned around an existing event such as the Athens Drive Jamboree, ENCWLOA must create a small scrimmage/playday opportunity to support the ENCWLOA
training event. Scrimmages can be 7v7 or something other than full-team and full-field. The goal is to get newbies out on the field to practice.

RATING GAME
  • At the conclusion of all of the training described above, the very last step is that all new officials must officiate a full game and receive a rating. The rating is performed by a certified official.
  • ENCWLOA must arrange rating opportunities for new officials. Hopefully, this can be done as part of pre-season scrimmages and/or playdays and also during the first few weeks of the season on lower-level games that aren’t very competitive.
  • Recruitment & Training Chair will communicate with newbies that recently completed training and tell them about next steps, including when their rating game will be.
